John Stirling’s brother George was born on December 6, 1919 in Dunblane, Scotland [01]. He was his parents George and Elizabeth Stirling’s first born child and according to the 1841 Scotland census [02], George is working as an engineer at the age of 21. On June 1, 1845, he was married in Glasgow to Mary Parker [03], and around 1846, their first child, George was born [04] followed by the birth of daughter Mary Haig Stirling in 1850 [05] and son Alexander Thomson Stirling in 1851 [06].

In June of 1852, George’s family immigrated to America, arriving in the Port of New York on June 24, 1852 after having made the passage from Glasgow on the bark Londonderry [07]. Their infant son Alexander does not appear on the 1860 Buffalo census [09] and is presumed to have passed on at some time between their arrival and June of 1860.  They settled in the area of Buffalo, New York and about a year later, the rest of the Stirling clan also immigrated to Buffalo, including his mother Elizabeth, brother Thomas, sister Marion and also around that time, his other brother John. George’s father also drops from sight somewhere between his arrival in 1853 and the 1860 census.

George appears on numerous Buffalo censuses and city directories from 1859 on, always listed as being a machinist or engineer [08-28]. Between 1855 and 1863, George and Mary have four other children including sons John (b.1855) and Daniel (b.1856), and daughters Jessie (b.1860) and Elizabeth (b.abt.1863) [15]. Their son Daniel was born in Canada in 1856 and there is reference to the family having lived in Chippewa, Ontario, just a short distance from Buffalo [29]. George’s move to Chippewa may have been related to the ship building industry that was active in the Chippewa at that time. Their last two children Jessie and Elizabeth were born back over the border in New York.

All of the original Stirling clan members relocated to other states except for George who remained in the Buffalo area all of his life, as did his children. George passed away in 1905 at the age of 86, leaving behind many descendants [29].

Much of the genealogy of George Stirling and his descendants can be found in the book “The Stirlings of Dunblane”, written in the pre-internet ‘70s by Curtiss B. Stirling, the great grandson of George Stirling. A microfilm version of this book can be viewed at any local LDS center for a nominal shipping charge.
